I have this friend, we'll call her Tammy. Well she is in a hunt for a roommate. She ended up putting an ad on Craigslist advertising that she had a spot. She got some responses, but nothing very promising. Finally, she got a response from a "French" girl who was living in "South Dakota."
"French Girl" as she came to be known, was named Sandra Jones. Tammy was super-stoked because Sandra was totally into moving and taking the spot. It didn't hurt that "French Girl" wrote many charming lines like "I can smell the kind of person you are, [and I like you]." Tammy took this simply to be a strange translation meaning that she had a good sense of who she was. As the days wore on, little was heard from "French Girl" until two weeks later when she said that she had been with her sick uncle, and that she would be sending a check for the rent and the holding fee.
Anyway, the money orders showed up yesterday, with a lot more than Tammy was expecting. The purpose for this was for her to deposit the money into her account and to send some of the extra ($1,500) to Sandra's moving company so they could get the stuff from SD to VA. It sounds weird, but Tammy was so excited to finally have word that her roommate was going to be moving in. She was telling me about it, and I didn't think it too odd until I heard that the money needed to be wired to the company in Nigeria. I questioned to make sure there was no sharing of bank info (which there wasn't), cause Nigeria sets off red flags in my mind.
Well, come to find out, Tammy finally connected all of the dots and realized that she was being scammed. When I Googled "Nigerian bank scams" it turns out that this is a variation on the original.
Now they send the check or money order, which needs to clear the bank first. In the mean time, the unsuspecting victim fronts some of their own money, wiring it to pay for moving expenses. They are thinking that all is well because they just need to wait for the funds to clear. Then they never do, and the victims are out the money that they fronted.
Luckily, Tammy didn't have the money to send the movers and she had to explain to Sandra in an email. Another friend of her's said "yeah, you're getting scammed." Then all of the pieces of the puzzle started fitting together. She realized that Sandra never got her actual address and she was supposed to be having movers take her stuff there, she sent what seemed like form emails saying "Dear (blank)," (attributed to her having quirky Frenchiness), and then Nigeria.
So anyway, in my humble opinion, Nigerian Bank Scams suck, and even though it sucks to be poor, it's better to be a little poor for a moment than to lose $1,500.

There are more than one of these "Sandra Jones", but the idea is the same. Nurse, South Dakota, Uncle, uncle is sick, must go visit uncle, really want the room. The new one is a finnish nurse "anja james".
The whole thing stank, and then when I got two nearly identical emails for a roommate, one from a french nurse, and then from a finnish nurse, I felt a little uneasy about the similarities but it didn't click right away. I wrote back to the finnish one that her email was nearly identical to one already sent. They are so brazen, they both kept writing. They haven't pulled the trigger on the scam yet, but I knew/know it's coming.
Another variation that I had to explain to a client out $5K was that after he sold his truck and sent it to mexico for the purchaser off ebay - check bounces, he paid shipping - that any time someone sends you money it takes 14 days, or up to 30 internationally, for the check to clear even if it appears to be certified. Sometimes even the banks get sucked in, and cover checks on accounts when the person overdrafts by less than $5K. Imagine not just being out the money, but being sued by your bank because they let you bounce a check.

Sandra Jones from France via South Dakota with the sick uncle is at it again. I posted an available room on Craigslist ( I know, stupid move) and guess who contacted me..sanjones102@aol.com...She was nice enough to send me two "money orders" for $1500.00 each and they were sent UPS next day,they arrived yesterday...I was told to take them to my bank asap, cash them, then take my monthly home rental price and security deposit and send the rest to a Kristina Cooper, 7 Stateline Road, Crystal Bay, NV 89402 with her shipping fees. I talked to my local Sheriff Dept and reported her. I also contacted Craigslist, AOL, the IL attorney general and other parties to report the scam. She called me a dozen times today and the phone number on caller id is Int Disc Teleco 973-482-3624. Beware of Sandra Jones and Kristina Cooper. Look up the phone number on whocalledme.com or just punch it into your browser and you will see that most of the calls from that number are scams...This girl sent me pics of her and everything...

as for "smell the kind of person you are" it's that "smell" and "sense" are the same verb in French, basically.
we had gotten a couple of emails, and things weren't quite adding up, but i was overlooking them since it was being done through somebody else and i didn't have all the details. i mentioned the situation to my landlord who knew it for the scam it was right away.

The name doesn't sound French to me so I was a little skeptical. It sounded too good to be true when she was so interested so fast and I got really suspicious when she asked for my work address repeatedly to send her deposit check. So surprise, surprise, I posted an ad on craigslist for the room I have for rent and I got a message from Katherine Williams (katewille13@aol.com). I got the story that she was a nurse living in SD, but that she was having to go to France to visit a sick uncle. She wanted my address so that she could overnight me money for the room. I appreciate you posting this information and I'm glad that I had the sense to google the e-mail address.
I have just encountered her -- now still using "Joy Williams" with an email address of joywilliams44@aol.com -- on Boston's Craigslist rooms/shares.
Let's keep tracking this creature, so others can Google her away from their lives.

And get this, the last two emails were after I told the JERK that I wouldn't cash anything until the JERK showed in person. I told the JERK to make a separate check to the shipper in the company name, not mine. In the next email, I told the JERK not to send any money and not to ship anything. What do I get, but the 5th email saying the money is sent. Nothing you say stops the BullSh!t!

I had a similar email from anjajames01@geekzonemail.com in response to my free rent for a female roommate to share my bed ad on craigslist. I always do research on people I talk to before resonding to their email. Good thing I did this time. I'm not sure how they planned on getting money from me since I'm offering free rent. There is no deposit and no rent so they have no reason to send me a check. I think I'll play their game and collect the check though. So far I have 5 nigerian scam checks hanging up in my cube at work. haha

Ok so I just got the money orders and this sucks. I put up an add on craigs list for an apartment and I have been talking to her for 2 weeks now. I had my bank check it out and it was a very close money order but not a good enough one. People like this need to be hung in the center of town...
She still doesnt know I am onto her and I am just buying time for the athorities to finally track her. I will keep you all updated....
This is still going on! In the past few weeks I have gotten several responses to a room I have available on Craigslist. The first time the email came from someone calling themselves Sarah and the email address was "serascoty07@aol.com" and the second one from the Katherine Williams name and the email address was "willicomps072@aol.com". The first email I got, the wording was so weird I just thought man, this person is really quite dumb...so I didn't respond. The second time, I realized that the wording was very similar to one I had already received so I checked out the email address and found this blog. The emails were from different addresses but definitley from the same person or group that is doing all of this scamming. Luckily, I never got to the point of emailing this person back, let alone actually making any plans with them. I'm sorry for those of you who did. Hopefully this person can be stopped!!! Ridiculous!
Glad I found this! I have had this person email me on several different occasions - I manage a small rental property in WA. Thia spammer is now katewille02@aol.com. She is supposedly in SD BUT the email address traces back to VA. She is now a nurse and her uncle is still in France. I am sending her the link to this site so that she gets the idea that more people are onto the scam, i just hope it gets to everyone. I suggest anyone who is contacted by these scammers does the same thing. Soon enough if we all stand up and let these idiots know we're on to them maybe CList will do something about it!!

Yup, I just got the very same email from the Canadian occupational nurse, who claims to live in Idaho with her sick uncle.
Sandra Jones is now Tyra Jones!! From S. Dakota, visiting her sick uncle in Helsinki! What a waste of time! Money orders arrived today to pay the moving company - I took them to my bank and I told them I thought they were bogus. Of course they were! Thanks for the posting -- wish I would have checked before I even communicated with her!

My sister is going through the exact thing right now but she is going by jennifermatthe1@aol.com and the name Jennifer Matthews from Finland. My sister is receiving her "check" on Monday. My mom was freaking out saying it was a scam and so I decided to google it just to be sure and i came up with a million websites about this person. We will be taking the check straight to the police as soon as it gets here and seeing what we can do about it. Thanks for all the posts!

I'd posted a Craigslist ad trying to get a roommate for a place I wanted to rent, and Jenni Francis (jenifrancis005@aol.com), the bi-lingual orphaned but with un oncle French girl in South Dakota, responded. I thought something was up when she ignored my questions about where all she was working now and even though I typed my emails to her en francais, I got en anglais the one about "I'm leaving to take care of my sick uncle in France, I can smell the kind of person you are" et cetera. So I googled 'Craiglist Scams + Jenni Francis' and got your blog. MERCI BEAUCOUP!
I had "Jeni Francis" the French, orphaned nurse, currently residing in SD, contact me.

The dialouge is WORD FOR WORD what I got in my emails.
The only thing that changed was the name at the end of the email.
I exchanged 3 emails then got a weird feeling and had my friends read to see what they thought. One sent me this link this morning. Thank goodness!

I posted an ad on craiglist looking for a room mate and a lady by the name if Kate Wayne contacted me. I decided to goggle her name and I am so glad that I did. She is a total bitch and I hope that she gets caught and punished to the fullest extremes of the law. Her email now is waynecare12@gmail.com. Everybody needs to keep posting bout her so her scam falls to pieces.

She is calling herself Natali Adams. She wants a room or share. I found this link that leads to an article talking about her scam and how she calls herself Anja James, and Donna, and Michelle Adams and really taking advantage of people who want to help her. Please be informed. The comments of this article show what happened to the people she got and those who got saved. Mine is all the way at the end. She is found in many places of craigslist, like in Washington, Kansas, Virginia, California and so on. Please be aware!

When I checked her IP address (you can do that by clicking "full header" or "header" of the email she sent) I found that it was coming from Kansas and Virginia. There are many free sites that can let you check that out.
I got similar emails from the same person from two aol accounts Feliciash and sanjones102. One claims to have a Finnish uncle and one claims to have a French uncle. Both claim to be from South Dakota although I don't think they live there. The picture I got was of a beautiful African woman in her 30s. How many African women have Finnish or French fathers? There's a lot that just doesn't add up. And the checks she sends are likely bogus. And no one will ever meet her in person!
She has as many aliases as she has throwaway addresses: Felicia Walsh, Sandra Jones, what have you. The giveaway is the emails all look canned!

She also goes by Sarah Burrow. I can't believe there are people still trying this! Something felt fishy so I went to a website that showed me how to check email ids. If you guys are ever unsure get the IP address by viewing headers on your email. Than plug it into trustedsource.org. That B**** used a computer in Kansas while saying she was in South Dakota. She's also listed references who didn't exist when I searched for them. I'm really bummed cause I needed a roommate. Also, I actually worked for the Red Cross several years and she didn't pan out...that's a great organization she's mocking!
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SUCCESSFULLY SCAMMED, BUT I SURE WOULD LOVE TO GET MY HANDS ON ONE OF THEM! I WOULD TIME THEM TO THE GROUND OUTSIDE AND SET UP ONE OF THOSE POTTIES RIGHT OVER THEIR FACE AND EVERY TIME I HAD TO TAKE A DUMP OR A PEE, I WOULD GO RIGHT ON THEIR FACE. AS THEY STARTED TO STARVE AND GET DEHYDRATED, THEY WOULD HAVE TO DRINK AND EAT SOME OF IT. ONCE THEY GOT SO SICK THEY WERE ABOUT TO DIE, I WOULD SET THEM AFIRE, LET THEM ROAST AWILE, THEN FEED THEM TO MY DOGS! AMEN!
I was in the same situation too. Luckily when I told my husband about our new roomnie, he was very cautious about the story and money orders.
The money order we received from her issued by Walmart. So we went there and asked them, they said they did not know about any money order issued by Walmart.
When I read some of your comments, I know the JERK just cut and pasted the some email contents to many people.
I also suspected because when I asked Sandra Jones some specific questions about her plan of working when she moved in with us, She ignored the questions. She used this email address sanjones02@aol.com
This scammer is STILL at it!!! Thanks for your post, glad I thought her emails were fishy so I googled it and found your blog. This person is now going by Tyra Jones, a nurse living in South Dakota, but originally from Finland. It was a waste of time emailing her back, but at least I didn't get as far as giving her my address!
Oh dear Lord, but hey craig's list is free right. Just got some emails fro a Jessica Anja who I found is also known as Anja James and apparently Sandra Jones. This time she said she was from Finland.
I got the "from South Dakota" story with the sick uncle and looking for a place and then thankfully I found the same story again and again on hubpages and here. This one came from email: anjacare@aol.com
