So, since the Oscars were this last week, and I have seen this on two friends' blogs, I decided that I would go through and put down which Best Picture Oscar winners I had seen. I am surprised to see that some of the "Classics" aren't on here "Citizen Kane," which I have seen, is supposed to be one of the greatest of all time, but it didn't win the Oscar. But, in an effort to be more cultured, I might start watching more of these movies. We'll see.
Oh, and I saw Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in "There Will Be Blood" last night, and I must say he was very deserving of the award--"I drink your Milkshake!! I drink it up!"

I Love the 80s

I really don't love the 80s, except for the fact that I am a product of that decade. The fashion, the music, the movies, the television programming--they're all kinda weird. Of course, there are classics from that era. I liked (and still do like) the Cosby Show, but what was the obsession with things from outer space (or at least a sci-fi theme): ALF? Knight Rider? Small Wonder? I recall there being one about a girl, whose father was dead, or in outer space, but she could talk to him through a diamond-shaped, flip-top box. I can't remember the name of that one, but these all are some weird premises for shows.
In music, there are some dismal tunes that came from that time (I would say that U2's "With or Without You" is truly an exception, and is one of the most timeless songs ever--my opinion obviously), but as bad as many were/are, every once in a while, you hear one, and it makes you happy. Today, for instance, I came into my office where I had put on Pandora, and they were playing "If You Leave" by OMD, and I kinda liked it more today than any other time I have heard it, which surely must have been over 100 times in my lifetime. Today's List...

Is not in existence today. You see, I can't think of five things to complain about. Suffice it to say that I am not a big fan of Leukemia this week, but that's another story.
I am sure I could think up some if I really tried, but I can't be bothered today. However, I did find this story talking about Hillary's campaign implosion, which asks some questions that I, myself had been asking. Mostly in that a). If Senator Clinton is "the most experienced," why is she not prepared enough to win Democratic primaries lately? Wouldn't a "prepared" candidate be able to handle an intra-party competition? She hasn't just lost, but has been trounced in 11 consecutive races. That says to me that something isn't right. b). If she says that she'll be "ready on day one," how are we to believe that if she's not ready today in the campaign? Her campaign has been poorly managed, and I think that should at least to some extent be a reflection on her, but we'll see what happens.

Total Eclipse of the Moon

So, a week ago I posted that wonderful music video classic by Bonnie Tyler. I had no idea at the time of the looming lunar eclipse that happened yesterday. But, since that was a pretty cool happening, I decided that I needed to take a picture. So here you are:

It's the best I could get. So don't complain. And that's that.
Oh, and while I am at it, I guess I can't forget to give a birthday shout out to my dad. I don't have any pictures with me, so that's unfortunate. But, I just want to say that he's a good man, and the best dad that I've ever had. I want to wish him a very happy birthday.

It's True, I've Got a [man] Crush on Obama

Yeppers, he won again!! So what if he lifted some lines from Deval Patrick's speech? He did a hell of a job delivering those lines. He's building on his momentum, and it makes me happy. Now, Hillary just needs to go away. She's a fantastic Senator, and I would vote for to re-elect her if I were in the Empire State, but at this time, I still like Obama for pres.

Today's List of Things That Must Go

1). Salt and Vinegar potato chips--they're nasty. I have tried them from time to time with the same results. I eat one, and want to puke. They smell bad, and that being said, if you take a couple of them, hold them by your mouth, and inhale, it makes you cough. Any food that makes you choke on it's fumes is likely not good for you, and as such, must go!!
2). The smell of Mulch--this nasty stuff that they put in the flower beds at my apartment complex must go. It has a weird smell of decomposition and that's not the most plesant thing to smell after a long day at work. Though the stench only lasted for about a week. It really grossed me out. I didn't need the sweet, pungent aroma in my life, and as such, it must go!!
3). My having to work on this holiday--I think I may have mentioned this on some of the other federal holidays that my company doesn't give me off, but it bears repeating. It stinks that many people get this paid holiday off, but I don't. I think this should go (read, Darin needs a holiday).
4). People not updating their blogs--I often get frustrated around Thursday when people have the same posts that they have had for a week or so. I just isn't right. Don't know know that I want to know about the fun goings-on in your lives (or you thoughts, or fun little tidbits you find online) when I need a break at work? If you don't update at least on a semi-regular basis, you must go. Maybe that's a little harsh, but you should at least update a little more frequently.
5). The next four weeks--well they must go quickly. As you see in thing that must go number three, I need a holiday, or a vacation, and I will be going for a brief vacation next month. One month from today even, I will be in the Sunshine state. So, the time between now and then must go quickly.

Turn around, Bright Eyes

I stumbled across this today, and thought that the whole world should take a quick trip back to the 80s and see the masterpiece that is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. I would implore that you each watch the whole thing just to see how bad it is, but if you can't manage that you should try for three minutes, and if that is unbearable, you have to at least make it to 46 seconds. After that, you will definitely want more.



What I don't understand is who ever thought that would be a good video to produce? One of the great mysteries of life I guess.

Devil, thy name is Oreo

I've got a confession to make. I have an addiction. It's sad, but true. I love mint Oreo cookies, and you know who I blame? My roommate. I have had an affinity for these delectable little treats in the past, but a month or two ago, said roommate started buying them in mass quantities and like a real druggy, gave me a free "hit," sharing them with me. Then they became standard fare when we would watch movies. Then I started buying them sometimes. Now, we pretty much have them in stock in our apartment. I think that, along with their minty goodness, they must have crack in them.
Tonight, as a matter of fact, we got pizza, and on our way home I said, "hey, you know what would be good?....mint Oreos." Turns out, he was thinking the same thing. We went to the Giant to find some, and guess what, they were sold out. Then we went to the CVS nearby. None to be found. My roommate was getting a little anxious by this time, worried that maybe mint Oreos had been discontinued, and we would never be able to enjoy them again. He started rocking back and forth, scratching his neck nervously while we decided where we would look next (so maybe I exaggerated a little her).
We decided to go to the Giant in Vienna. Vindication!!! As we began our journey home, we listened to Queen's "We are the champions" in victory. When we arrived home, we celebrated by eating a lot of them. Mmmm Mmmm Good!!
In my humble opinion, mint Oreo cookies are bout the best treat around. If you haven't tried them already, you should. You will love them too.

Amy Winehouse

I have heard a lot about Amy Winehouse lately--her drugs and crazy lifestyle. She's got a look that is very distinct. I'll giver her this: it's a lovely beehive she's got these days. But until today, I hadn't heard any of her music. So, I decided to find out what it's all about, and I was pretty much amazed. Very unique. This girl has got some talent. So, if there is anyone else out there like me, who doesn't know her music, I share "Rehab" with you. (Turns out the youtube video can't be embedded, so click on the link and it will take you there.

Hooray!! Though I think McCain will be a tough candidate, it makes happy nonetheless. Somehow, we just need hillary to do the same.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Work

Since I have on many occasions complained about riding on the DC Metro, and in general make it known that I hate it, I think it only fair to note that today was an absolutely pleasant ride into work. I showed up at my usual time, and a train arrived shortly thereafter. Much to my surprise, it was (well, I can't say empty) rather un-full. I had a seat, and I proceeded to read my paper in peace until I got to my stop. This pleased my soul immensely. Now it's just seven excruciating hours 'til I get to ride home, let's hope it's equally as pleasant.

Super-duper Tuesday

I know I complained about primary election coverage and how the whole dang thing needs to be over about two weeks ago. But now, at about 12:30 in the morning after Super-Tuesday guess who is still up, waiting for the results. That's right, it's me. It's been an interesting night. I am shocked about how well Huckabee has done. It hasn't been the knock-out race that McCain had wanted, but surprisingly, it hasn't been Romney who has been getting in the way. It's pretty fascinating to me. I don't mind cause, a). Huck's doing well, doesn't do well for Romney overall (I know I am being a bad Mormon by not backing Willard, but he just seems like a sleazy politician to me) b). I like that the under-dog can really do well in this country and, c). This means that the republicans still won't solidly be behind one candidate, which bodes well for my peeps.
On the Democratic front, my man, Obama is doing well. He could be doing better, but he has done far better than anyone would have imagined about a month and a half ago. Though I am a fan of the Democrats, I am terrified that they will ultimately nominate Hillary. She is also doing well (I just checked and it looks like right now, she just won California--Expletive deleted). Her doing well really scares me, because I don't think she can win in November. Besides that, if she does win in November, I don't think she'll be capable of the change that we need in this country. She's the establishment. Nothing will change under her. I may be wrong, and I hope I am. But I want the best for this country that has given me so much, and I think the right direction is one in which Barack Obama would lead us, and sadly, the thought of another term with the Clintons makes me not want to vote at all, cause heaven knows I won't be voting for a Republican.
Boy this is a roller coaster ride. Let's hope after tonight, Barack can continue on with his message of hope. And then next Tuesday, I can vote for him here.

Today's List of Things That Must Go

I need to air some gripes about metro people again
1). People who run, full-speed, through the station to get their train--This is very dangerous. Do you really love your job that much that you can't wait for the next train that will be there about three minutes later? I always want to stick my foot out and just see how far they will fly.
2). Idiots who line up at the door two stops ahead of where they plan to get off--I really don't think that during rush hour that the driver will leave before you have a chance to get off. Inevitibly, it is always middle-aged, balding white men, or non-balding Indian men (not native American). Some metro riders just need to get a grip. If you're not the first out the door, life will go on.
3). Ketchup being spelled catsup--what is that? Cat sup? at best, it could be cats up? Thre is not ch sound that should be there. I don't even like ketchup all that much, but it should be spelled how it sounds.
4). American Idol--I hate it, it must go!! How many years has it been on? I don't know. I don't care. I will never watch, I will never vote. If I find out an artist was on American Idol, I don't listen to them (except Kelly Clarkson--some of her songs are catchy).
5). Speed bumps in my parking lot--there are five speed bumps, maybe six, in the parking lot at my apartment complex they irritate me. They are probably there to slow people like me, but it really stinks when there are folks who take their sweet time to get over them in front of me. It hasn't been an issue until last week, and it happend thrice. I was none too pleased.

Pandora's Box

So, I have found a new treat, whose usefulness rivals that of my iPod for listening enjoyment at work. It's called Pandora. Sure, this won't be a big discovery to most. I actually have known about it for quite some time, but have only recently used it. It's a delight because it makes your own personal radio station based on your music preferences, and it totally kicks Yahoo's butt in doing it.
My music stylings based on my preferences are quite varied, and as such I get some interesting music. As it stands now, I rarely have to skip songs, which makes me pretty happy.
So I turned it on today, and shortly after beginning it, I was busy at work, and I noticed there was a catchy tune playing. I kind of recognized it, and was kinda humming along and then it got to the chorus: "I don't want anybody else, When I think about you, I touch myself." I was suddenly transported back to the 90s by this jem by the DiVinyls.
As the music had a catchy tune, I decided to keep listening to it (the tune, and I am not sure if I have a limit to the songs I can skip), and then I got to thinking. My thoughts are these: A) I don't care what you do in the privacy of your own home, but I don't think I want to hear about it in song. B) Did the DiVinyls really hope to have a follow-up hit after that song? How could they top that?
Anyway, try out Pandora, it's really pretty handy.
